What a window sticker shows

The Monroney label, named after Senator Mike Monroney, who wrote the 1958 law that requires it, goes on the window of every new car sold in the US. It is the one document that says exactly how a car left the factory.

  1. Base price and total MSRP

The manufacturer's suggested retail price of the model, the price of each option, the destination charge and the total.

    On the original only

  2. Standard equipment

What every car of this trim comes with, from the safety systems to the infotainment.

    Partly on the rebuilt sticker

  3. Optional equipment

The packages and options fitted to this particular car at the factory: the part that tells two identical-looking cars apart.

    On the original only

  4. Fuel economy and environment

The EPA label: city, highway and combined MPG (or range for an electric car), the yearly fuel cost and the greenhouse gas rating.

    On the original only

  5. Crash test ratings

NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings for the frontal, side and rollover tests, when the model has been rated.

    On the original only

  6. Parts content and assembly

The share of US and Canadian parts, where the engine and transmission come from, and the plant that assembled the car.

    Partly on the rebuilt sticker

Automakers that still publish their window stickers

These makers serve the original label of vehicles built for the US market to anyone with the VIN. For every other make, the lookup rebuilds the sticker from NHTSA's record.

Window sticker questions

How do I find a window sticker by VIN?

Type the 17-character VIN above. For Ford, Lincoln, Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles built for the US market, the page links to the original sticker published by the automaker. For every other make, it rebuilds the sticker from the vehicle's NHTSA record.

What is a Monroney sticker?

The window sticker US law requires on every new car, named after Senator Mike Monroney, who sponsored the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958. It lists the base price, the factory options, the total MSRP, the EPA fuel economy, the crash test ratings and where the car was assembled, and it has to stay on the window until the car is delivered to its buyer.

Is the window sticker lookup free?

Yes. No account, no email, and no limit beyond a fair-use cap of 60 lookups an hour.

Why does the automaker's PDF say the sticker is not available?

The automaker has not released it for that VIN. It happens with cars built very recently, with older model years the maker no longer keeps online, and when the maker's service is down for a while. The rebuilt sticker on this page shows what NHTSA records for the VIN either way.

Is the rebuilt sticker the same as the original?

No. It comes from NHTSA's vPIC database, so it shows the year, model, trim, engine, transmission, standard safety equipment and assembly plant, but not the price, the options or the fuel economy. Only the original label carries those.

Why is there no original sticker for Toyota, Honda or BMW?

Those automakers keep window stickers inside their dealer systems instead of publishing them by VIN. A franchised dealer of the brand can usually print a copy from the VIN.

Can I show the window sticker in my listing?

Yes, and buyers trust it: it proves the options and the price when new better than a list typed by the seller. Add a photo of it to the listing, or link to the automaker's PDF.
