Jeep original window sticker

Jeep serves the original window sticker (the Monroney label) as a PDF for vehicles built for the US market. Decode a VIN above and the link comes with the result. Older vehicles, and ones built for other markets, may not have one on file.

How to read a VIN

Every car built since 1981 carries a 17-character vehicle identification number. It is not random: each part answers a question about the vehicle.

  • 1-3

World manufacturer identifier (1 to 3)

Who built the vehicle, and in which country. The first character is the region: 1, 4 and 5 for the United States, 2 for Canada, 3 for Mexico, J for Japan, K for Korea, W for Germany, V for France and Spain.

  • 4-8

    Vehicle descriptor (4 to 8)

The model, body, engine and restraint systems, coded the way each manufacturer chooses. This is the part a decoder needs the manufacturer's own data to read.

  • 9

    Check digit (9)

Worked out from the other sixteen characters, so a misread or mistyped VIN shows up at once. Mandatory in North America, often unused elsewhere.

  • 10

    Model year (10)

One character per year: letters for 1980 to 2000 and again from 2010, digits for 2001 to 2009 and again from 2031. The table below gives every code.

  • 11

    Assembly plant (11)

The factory the vehicle came out of. Each manufacturer keeps its own list.

  • 12-17

    Serial number (12 to 17)

The vehicle's own production number, the part that sets this VIN apart from every other car of the same model.

Where to find the VIN

  • At the base of the windshield

On the driver's side, readable from outside through the glass. The quickest place to check it on the lot.

  • On the driver's door pillar

On the label in the door jamb, next to the tire pressures and the build date.

  • On the title and the registration

The title, the registration card and the insurance card all carry it. Check it matches the car before you buy or sell.

  • In the engine bay and on the frame

Stamped into the bulkhead or the chassis, which is where an inspector looks to make sure the plates have not been swapped.

Model year codes

The tenth character gives the model year. The same thirty codes come round every thirty years, so each code stands for two possible years.

A 1980 / 2010
B 1981 / 2011
C 1982 / 2012
D 1983 / 2013
E 1984 / 2014
F 1985 / 2015
G 1986 / 2016
H 1987 / 2017
J 1988 / 2018
K 1989 / 2019
L 1990 / 2020
M 1991 / 2021
N 1992 / 2022
P 1993 / 2023
R 1994 / 2024
S 1995 / 2025
T 1996 / 2026
V 1997 / 2027
W 1998 / 2028
X 1999 / 2029
Y 2000 / 2030
1 2001 / 2031
2 2002 / 2032
3 2003 / 2033
4 2004 / 2034
5 2005 / 2035
6 2006 / 2036
7 2007 / 2037
8 2008 / 2038
9 2009 / 2039

On North American vehicles the seventh character tells the two apart: a letter there means 2010 or later, a digit means 2009 or earlier. Outside North America the year code is optional and often missing.
