What Alabama asks for
Last checked October 2026. Rules change: confirm with the agency before a sale.
-
Titles and registration are handled by the Alabama Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division. revenue.alabama.gov/division/motor-vehicle
-
Alabama has no official bill of sale form of its own, so a written bill of sale with the details below is what buyers and sellers use.
-
A bill of sale is only needed in some cases in Alabama.
Needed as proof of ownership for vehicles more than 35 model years old, which are exempt from titling.
-
Alabama does not say whether a bill of sale must be notarized. If in doubt, the notary block is there to add.
Worth knowing
-
Two copies, two signatures
Print the document twice. Seller and buyer each sign both copies and keep one. It is the proof of who owned the vehicle, when it changed hands, and for how much.
-
Before you sign
Check the VIN on the document against the car and the title, and copy the odometer reading off the dashboard, not from memory. A wrong digit is what makes a bill of sale useless on the day it is needed.
-
After the sale
The title still has to be signed over, and most states expect the seller to report the sale to the DMV within days. Each state page below says where to start.
-
Your details stay on your machine
Names, addresses and the sale price are nobody's business but yours and the buyer's. The document is put together in your browser: nothing reaches us and nothing is stored.
Bill of sale by state
Each state page says whether that state requires a bill of sale, whether it has its own form, and whether it needs a notary.
